Marble Horse
Well first off, allow me to apologize for the title of the piece. How bland. While it does beat “Horsey”, it is not by much. I really need to work on my naming skills. This piece is actually a first, being the first piece I have completed in marble, and I am reasonably satisfied! While marble is a lot more difficult to remove than limestone and a lot more fragile, the end result is definitely worth it. Now I will be up front here and admit that I know nothing about horse anatomy, everything I know came from internet images. Which is why I aimed for a more stylized version of a horse- almost chess piece like if you want to be honest. I was looking for smooth planes and surfaces, the only real detail resides in the eyes and the flop of hair at the top of the stylized mane. This was developed from a simple cartoon sketch and turned out reasonably well, the marble color is also not overwhelming and adds to overall style of the piece. The marble is actually salvaged architectural stone from the Second Chance Store in Baltimore, Maryland. Not sure what it was in a previous life, but judging from other pieces I have it was part of an interior facade of some sort. Whatever, it’s mine now, and more to come.
